Guatemalan Authorities Make Arrests in Cabral Case
As promised, President Álvaro Colom and Guatemalan authorities acted quickly in the investigation of the killing of Argentine singer Facundo Cabral on July 9. After reviewing hotel surveillance footage, police identified and arrested two suspects on Tuesday, July 12. Organized crime, which the Guatemalan President asserts is responsible for the attack, is one of the most pressing concerns the Guatemalan government faces. Due to poor social programs, the culture of violence in Latin American has been plagued and exacerbated by the rise in organized crime in recent years.
