COHA Condemns the Assassination Attempt Against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro
The Council on Hemispheric Affairs condemns the attempted assassination against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and the wounding of seven functionaries of the armed forces on August 4, 2018. Whether this was the culmination of a bizarre plot with foreign backers or a rogue operation by a few opposition extremists to eliminate despised ideological foes, it could have set off a series of events whose consequences would have likely been catastrophic for the entire region. COHA urges the appropriate authorities in the United States and the OAS to immediately investigate whether any international actors were complicit in funding, planning, or deployment of this terrorist act. COHA continues to support dialogue and democratic procedures over violence and death as a means of contesting political differences within and among regional nations.
