President Obama’s Speech to the People of Cuba

President Obama had the opportunity to address the Cuban people during his landmark visit to Havana. His speech reflected his desire to mend the bridges between Cuba and the United States that were burned during the Cold War in addition to reiterating his hope that the embargo will be lifted. Obama stated, “I have come here to bury the last remnant of the Cold War in the Americas. I have come here to extend the hand of friendship to the Cuban people.” Obama showed respect for the sovereignty of the Cuban people and expressed confidence that the United States and Cuba can work together to overcome their differences. He expanded upon this idea through his statement, “’I am also confident that Cuba can continue to play an important role in the hemisphere and around the globe — and my hope is that you can do so as a partner with the United States.”
